The mating of mods...
« on: February 07, 2012, 03:03 am »

So my friend and I stumbled across a way to "mate" two mods together.

I was attempting to configure Rise of the Mandalorians for his computer. This was something I had done before and I had no reason to believe it would go wrong again. For some reason, I don't remember what, I had to create my own shortcut. This, I have also done before and wasn't worried. YET, when I started the game (with the mod launcher) z3r0x's mod's splashscreen popped up instead of ROTM's. This greatly confused me and I got more confused very quickly. When I got to the menu screen. Everything looked fine except for one thing:
z3r0x's mod uses the typical button sounds found in the vanilla FOC. When you click a button, you hear the vanilla FOC sound. ROTM's button sounds are different though. When I started what appeared to be z3r0x's mod though, the button sounds were that of ROTM!! Everything else on the menu, (don't ask about the music, I'm not sure) was z3r0x except the button noises! I was very confused by then :D

After doing some looking at the shortcut, I found that the mod was starting in LucasArts/Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption/Mods instead of just Forces of Corruption. I think that WIndows 7, when finding this unsuspected error in my shortcut making, temporarily merged the z3r0x folder with the ROTM folder and got rid of all duplicates between the two, in favor of z3r0x. This is the only idea that I can come up with that makes sense.

If we can replicate this, this might allow for the "mating" of mods though I have heard that previous attempts to do this generally ended badly. This could allow for stuff though such as the Republic at War GUI in ROTM etc.

What do you guys think of this?

Oh yeah, and if someone wants maybe to move this to the Modding Discussion?

I've discovered this by accident, too.  I got the best of ACM and another smaller mod.  The other mod allowed you to have a Victory cruiser in the air during land battles so I got the best of both.

And yes, trying to mix mods does tend to end badly.  If you're going to try it, back up both of the mods and your saved games so you don't lose anything.

Out of curiosity, can I see what your shortcut variables looked like?
