Empire at war on linux?
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:13 pm »

I know that there was someone who posted an article on this awhile ago...
Has anyone successfully gotten Empire at War working on linux through wine? While with the computer I have it might not make much sense, it might be worth it to do anyway.

Thanks for posting back but unfortunately, I am a native english speaker and google translate doesn't work very well...I could get the gist of it but not all of it.

If I am at this forum much longer, I'm going to need to learn to speak German :)

Oops. Sorry, didn't even recognized it was german. No you don't have to, there is only a minority who speaks german here/is native german speaker. I'll translate it:
Wine configuration:
First, get the d3dx9_27.dll (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_27) and copy it to home/[yourusername]/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32
Next, open your registry (type in console regedit).
Change in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Microsoft->DirectX the version to the value of "4.09.00.0904" and InstalledVersion "0000000900000000" (in case it isn't there make new keys (REG_SZ-type)).
Installation of EaW:
Install EaW via setup.exe (wine will catch this automatically). Next thing is to copy the no CD/DVD crack over the original files (it's not possible for wine to catch those CD-validation-requests): Switch to "/home/[yourusername]/.wine/drive_c/Programme/LucasArts/Star\ Wars\ Empire\ at\ War/GameData/" and paste the cracked content in.
Last thing is:
"wine sweaw.exe"
Maybe this doesn't work. in this case try:
"WINEDEBUG=-all wine sweaw.exe -SAFEMODE"

Okay thanks! When I opened the registry, the Direct X registry was already set though, so I am going to assume that no changes need to be made there...
I didn;t entirely understand how to get around the no CD/DVD crack. I have Empire at War /FOC installed on my dad's computer though. Is it possible just to copy the folders over onto my linux system? It seems to me that that would be a lot easier. Also, are these instructions just for EAW or are they for FOC as well?

Thanks so much, you are my hero for the day! :angel

No, you have to install it. And you can follow the same way with FoC, yes.
Concerning the No-DVD: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4589879/Star_Wars_Empire_at_War_v1.5_crack <- e.g. this one. But watch out, maybe your laws could define this as "illegal".

Okay thanks. I got the crack from the pirate bay. My firewall registered numerous hits on my computer seconds later. Some I think were from "thepiratebay" and were allowable. Others originated from Washington DC which was not as reassuring  :P
I think my firewall held though so I should be fine. If you don't hear from me in awhile you'll know why :)

I did get the files though, thank you. I'll tell you whether it works or not.

A few more questions...

I suppose there an FOC crack that I will need too...where can I get that? Also, I imagine that it will ask for the registration code when I install. I can just enter the code that I got with the box correct?

You can. You can look for the FoC crack on your own, just use the piratebay search engine. Or use google, something like "star wars forces of corruption 1.1 crack download".

Auuugh!! I got so close. I was able to enter the key, able to choose Automatic or Custom setup, and was even able to install Xfire! But when the time came in which I click the button to start the installation of the game itself, the window closes immediately. This is definitely closer than I was yesterday in which I would run setup.exe and it wouldn't even run without giving me an error message. Now I got so much farther, but it will still not quite finish up!

Should the Installed Version in the registry be of the type REG_BINARY? Do you have any other ideas? I feel like I'm so close! :wall

Don't know, thought it was REG_SZ. I've never tried it on my own, so you have to try each possibility.

Hrm...I was unable to change it to Reg_sz so I suppose there is nothing I can do about that...I actually was able to get past the problem of it "encountering a serious problem and needing to close," and a window will come up for a second like it wants to start up but it never does. Is there anything else on the wiki page about debugging or anything?

Thanks so much for your help, even if I never get it working I appreciate the time you are giving to me.

YEEEEEESSS! Success! I was able to install the game after manually installing the native version of Direct X. I'll have to copy over the cracked files to see if it works but I am getting closer every day.

Okay...why? I have yet to get it though I will need to check again as I just compiled the newest version of Wine. Though from what I can tell, the way to make this game work varies from system to system due to hardware and all that. If I ever get it to work, sure, I'll write a guide but you'd probably be just as well off looking at the way other people have gotten it to work.
Here's some links that I have been using:

Thanks for the links. One day I might get around to trying.
