Job Position: General Development Assistant (Vacancies: 1)

Staff Level: Development Assistant

Job Description: Assisting UEaW lead devs to reduce their workload so they can focus on finishing the larger elements of the game, and working with them to balance the game and later oversee beta-testers. This will include:
  • Researching
  • Game testing
  • XML editing - minor coding work such as changing values, troubleshooting minor errors
  • Assisting with forum management - in a minor staff role, answering queries, low-level moderation and PR
Applicant Requirements: Applicants ought to have:

  • Enthusiasm, dedication to UEaW and perseverance. Dev Assistants will be working with Lead Dev staff to help them complete what is a massive modification - nay, game - but it will take time and, unfortunately, some repetitive work. Anyone who wishes to take up this role should be enthusiastic about UEaW and EaW in general, and be willing to contribute their ideas and work towards the mod as well as just take instructions.
  • A proficiency for dealing with mod fans, a respectable reputation with UEaW staff and board members and elsewhere in the EaW modding community and a degree of professionalism. We don't expect pillars of the community or suit-wearing office workers (though I do rather like suits...), don't fear, but you will have what is both the responsibility and privilege of representing UEaW!
  • Patience, as Obi-Wan would say. Sometimes game testing can be repetitive (other times, you get to blow things to pieces for fun!) and we will at times ask you to do some research for us because we're busy trying to write a script for X, Y or Z.
  • A working understanding of playable content XML - that is, they do not need to be a dedicated coder who can manipulate every aspect of the game, so long as they have mastered the editing of game units, hardpoints, projectiles et cetera. The extent of this requirement is only so that Dev Assistants can follow requests from Lead Devs to help editing of content that we have already created, and they will be provided with specific instructions.
  • Availability and willingness to frequently log into either Windows Live Messenger or Skype.
The Benefits of this position: Though at times it may feel as though you are having to be the mod mouse droid, the position comes with benefits:

  • Dev Assistants will be working on a continuously updated copy of UEaW. This means that testing will be on a constantly up-to-date copy of the mod's alpha build, and they will have a functioning pre-versioned copy of the game to test to their hearts' content.
  • Though not full dev staff, Dev Assistants are mod staff and will be credited in UEaW V1 in both credits and with similar easter-egg options as the rest of the staff.
  • If they so wish, Dev Assistants could potentially sign on as full-time staff for UEaW V2 if they have the required skills for a Dev job, without having to go through the usual application procedures and irrespective of department quotas.
  • And of course, though you will not be responsible for decisions regarding gameplay or coding, you will nevertheless have a voice in the shape of UEaW, and access to Lead Devs directly to discuss ideas and opinions.

I would like to apply for a dev assistant position.  I have limited experience modding EaW, making minor tweaks and debugging minor issues.  I have experience tweaking mods I download and have participated, albeit limitedly, in the Clone Wars mod team and the Corporate Addon Team (a long time ago in a galaxy that is the exact same as the one I am currently in)

Given your local time being GMT+1, I'm guessing you'd be somewhere in mainland Europe?

It's the same spot as sloosecannon is applying for. All applications in competition are considered purely on merit, with the exception of existing staff or contributors who wish to increase their workload.

There no vacancies for PR staff for two reasons:

1. We have s-t-n on staff, the only reason you don't see him do more stuff is because we've been poor at providing him information and media to work with.

2. We don't really need much in the way of PR at the moment; the boards are almost dead and our external profiles are well-manned with the people we have at the moment...

Hence there is no thread for PR recruitment, I'm afraid.

It means a greater burden organising them - if there's not enough work for them to do, it takes longer for me to try and organise everyone so they're doing things, taking up time I could be working on the game.
