who has betrayed us, only people who have played UEAW can send these stupid bots here. I want to know even if we have to manually search each forum member. This is just getting outrageous. Another bot will be here soon, I've seen this sort of bot attack before. The creator will make up to 1,000 bots and flood our forums if we don't find out who it is. We must find this madman or woman

Why would they have to play UEAW to put a bot here? They'd just need access to the site.

i can honestly say most people wouldn't have found this particular site unless they played UEAW or spent mindless hours searching random urls until they finally found ours. you probably need to visit a site to place a bot there, simply because you can upload it.

Okay. So I'll give you the task, to find out who this origin is, you may search beyond the ~2500 no-bot members. Additional, you will be entrusted with the task to find a way to handle with this person - what shall we do with him after you've found him, you know, banning him from the boards won't avoid his bots and talking nicely to him is also senseless - so make a plan please.
Also, you probably have to search beyond the moddb.com-members, because they could also be the origin of this attack.

Got some spam watcher thingy going on when you look for who's online, bots have a hand symbol beside them to show that they're bots.

I don't think that Mike is intentionally witholding power, it's just that different levels of staff have different permissions- and I could not even edit the posts in the announcements section. In other sections I can at least edit posts.

Unless there is a simple "permanently delete post" option that wouldn't work, as deleted posts go to an archive in the staff section... you'd have to have access to that section in order for it to show up on places to move it to, and that board is private for good reasons. Official UEAW-type stuff. Top secret.

Anyhow, I do know that shim has banned a few of the bots posting the adult material, but there are just too many others to get rid of them all.

Maybe limit the amount of Hyperlinks or images that can be put in a post to 5, any post with more than five requires Moderator approval.

The Problem with that is that there are players in FW that have "0" posts, but have to post Links + Pics...

I like to add the images and links into my posts to give a sense of scale, a sense of exactly what is going on, where, how, with who and what. The images I often post are either direct screenshots, or concept art from the game I based my faction on(most of them are, anyways).

I hope I fixed the situation.

I installed a forum mod that checks all new registrations against the Stop Forum Spam database. This should prevent (most) new bots from registering.

Next, I decided to test all current members against the database. After some sanity checks to make sure there were no false positives, out of the 3958 members on this forum, 1487 (38%) came up as spammers based on their IP and/or e-mail address. 1416 of them have registered since June 2011.

I have deleted all 1487.

In the process I created a nice diagram that shows the member registrations per month on the forum:

So, I hope this solves it once and for all. And I hope future spam posts become an isolated incident.

It appears our forum was found by an auto spam registry. or at least that'd be my guess, due to the massive number of registry in one month.

Well if any more pop up we'll keep reporting them to you.

Don't report them to Mike, report them to a mod if they seem to have not noticed. We can then ban them. Mike is a very busy person and doesn't need to be bothered with the occasional bot leaking through! IF we feel it is needed, then we may decide to call Mike in for another security update. It was ridiculous how many bots were there, on the board directory where it shows users that have logged in today it was more full than it was back in the day, because of all the bots that had newly registered.
