Online Menu Frozen?
« on: February 05, 2011, 07:08 am »

Me and a friend try to play online in the game with UEAW (the ports needed to be forwarded would be helpful as we'd liek to go LAN) but when we get to the main menu (online lobby) it just freezes. The music continues to play and the mouse is moveable, but no buttons are selectable and we're unable to get past there. Help would be appreciated.

this is because of some changements gamespy applied to their servers. Summary: Some PCs can't reach any servers anymore, so the game can't connect to the servers and freezes.
To fix this, go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc. There is a file called "host". Open it with a normal editor. Add at the end of the document the following lines:
127.0.0.1 host42.hrwebservices.net
127.0.0.1 rdr2ps3.ms4.gamespy.com
127.0.0.1 match.gta4ps3.gamespy.com
127.0.0.1*.ms4.gamespy.com
127.0.0.1 207.38.11.34
127.0.0.1 Owner-PC.gateway.2wire.net
This should solve your problem.

First: You have to be admin, but it seems you've found it out at yourself.
Second: The solution won't be more easy/the answer won't come faster if you write a lot of ! and ?, special marked with another colour...
Third: So, evidently, either you haven't followed exactly these instructions, because they're fixing this problem (for ppl who had these problems) OR you have another problem...Hm, could be also possible, that this fix only works for germans, but the host-names are .net/.com-adresses, so I think they're working also for other language-versions.
So, check again if you've followed exactly this instructions, (after I'm back from spain I could send you also a program which does thesesteps automatically) and if, explain exactly your problem again.

sorry I panicked, because I am the administrator and, as I said before, it said only the administrator could access it. now mine says "hosts" not "host". could that be a problem? here is what the file says in its entirety with my changes:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#   127.0.0.1       localhost
#   ::1             localhost
#   127.0.0.1 host42.hrwebservices.net
#   127.0.0.1 rdr2ps3.ms4.gamespy.com
#   127.0.0.1 match.gta4ps3.gamespy.com
#   127.0.0.1*.ms4.gamespy.com
#   127.0.0.1 207.38.11.34
#   127.0.0.1 Owner-PC.gateway.2wire.net

Remove the '#' before these entries and you'll be fine. Oh and remove
"#   ::1             localhost"
this line.
(# at a start of a line means, that the redirection is not in use)...and no, the file name is "hosts", so you're fine.

What do you mean with "the connection is not that great"?

No they aren't...Maybe it's something with your firewall. Otherwise it's your internet...maybe it's to slow?
