The UEAW Galaxy
« on: April 30, 2010, 02:49 pm »

While we're all busy working on the mod, I thought it would be good to provide something interesting. So here's the map of the UEAW galaxy, with all trade routes displayed.

Click the image to view it on Imageshack and zoom to the full size. You will probably need to zoom in to read the labels.

Although i see that you have made it more canon, my personal opinion would be to perhaps...flex your artistic license... on the positions of those planets. In some of those clusters it could be hard to click the correct planet, causing much frustration. Im sure you remember how annoying it was in PR.

Nice work anyway though

It's actually not too bad in game. The viewing angle means that the planets are actually reasonably spread out.

Currently 68. This keeps galactic conquest mode lag-free even when all the planets are present.

Evilbob spent quite some time sorting this out; and I believe he spent much of it carefully calibrating it to work perfectly with UEaW.

The campaign indeed only currently features 68 planets; but this is a number that provides a perfect balance between not enough and too many. It allows for seamless performance whilst still keeping the game environment open and expansive. More is not necessarily better; but a varied selection of planets with their own strategic worth - and deficiencies in it, potentially.

Furthermore, the universe will expand evolutionarily over time - new eras unlocking new areas of the galaxy, as conflicts expand; as based on canon exploration and expansion.

You should have no problem. My laptop runs a 2GHz dual core so the game can only access 2GHz, and it runs really well  :)

It's best to compare it to other mods that you've played.

Things like the Stargate Mod on full galaxy have over 100 planets; on the 136 map (I think that's one), when the factions are at their most diverse my quad-core PC starts to have problems, but it's to do with the game engine too.

68 is a lovely amount for a campaign - for our semi-story driven semi-sandbox format it provides a large area; and on most computers should run smoothly even when all planets are in play.

On top of the raw number, each planet is positioned canonically and trade routes, hyperspace et cetera reflect this; but many planets have semi-linear storyline significance, and all are strategically geared towards the game scenario in different eras.

Potentially extra GCs could be included for free-play, which would have different planet sets.

That is what we intend. We hope that we will have a story GC which will have all the eras, then era-specific GCs that allow you to play, for example, just Clone Wars.

for all combinations of eras (of course without combinations like kotor and rebelion) you need 10 configurations:
or; cw; reb; nr; or+cw; cw+reb; reb+nr; or+cw+reb; cw+reb+nr; or+cw+reb+nr
the best would be a thing like starting era and ending era like it is with the techlvl

Presently, support for cross era fighting - exempli gratia Rebels versus the Sith Empire - is only planned for skirmish battles. The Galactic Conquest campaigns will only presently feature either storyline or technological development driven era progression or straight wars between two same-era factions.

Thus, a Death Star won't be able to turn up and zap the Sith Empire in GC, nor will you be able to turn up as the CIS over Mon Calamari and expect to find an MC90 and a New Republic task force.

For skirmish battles, an extra set of damage controllers has been made so cross-era factions may play against each other in single tactical battles, but there is no support presently for a similar GC system planned.
