unit upkeep
« on: September 26, 2009, 06:59 pm »

most ships need repairs and soldiers need food and that money has to come from somewhere, would there be any possible way this can be put into the game?

good.  upkeep makes you think about how many units you can build without going bankrupt.  then people can't just build monster flets and conquer any planet they want with a planet-size army.

can we make it so that you'll lose units if thier upkeep isn't paid in a while?  if possible.

it'll probably be automatic; clicking every unit and paying for their upkeep would make it more like Star Wars tycoon

yes but if it automatically pays for them then they won't disappear until you run out of money

Big fleets are fun, and will still be quite possible, indeed probable.

However, what the upkeep and economic model will mean is that you can't just rely on many large flees, you as have to earn and upkeep them. This contributes to the new valuing of each individual asset as well as groups, making each fleet and its contents more important and widening the spectrum in terms of the kind of battles going on (from skirmishes to epic clashes) and also thus increasing the player's requirement to properly manage both their fleets and economy.

Furthermore, the potential galactic population limit will be much higher; however you'll need to be wise and have some economic prowess to make use of it. Another trade-off.

It's a part of the wider game experience in which one has to act as a galactic strategist instead of just someone throwing endless supplies of ships at things.

From a dev's point of view, it also tweaks the balancing slightly; whilst losing ships means you have major strategic issues with defence and obviously losing territory, the financial repercussions reflect a more accurate war economy - you'll need to invest to reinforce your numbers, but the loss of the vessels will reduce your maintenance overhead.

indeed - it'll no longer be a case of simply saving for a big [censored] fleet and blowing all your cash - doing so could be disastrous if you ran out of cash cos you couldn't upkeep the units.

LTCC - what happens if you can't afford the upkeep?

This is indeed a problem Solar; the game engine, AFAIAA, does not have a repercussion system.

I do believe, however, I could event one in, since I can trigger things at the detection of a 0 credit balance; even the removal of units is possible but a variety of detrimental factors can be applied.

Yes but if there is no effect of debt, then one could play on until -x millions, theoretically, with no detriment.

or can you make planets/units revolting and become pirates?

One of various possibilities.

Is there any way to have the vehicles and units then, without being paid, have an extreme degradation of their health HP and their weapons effectiveness? Simulate the decrease in upkeep as the repercussion?

There will be some economic changes but not a complete overhual.  For example, unit upkeep cost will be implimented, but losing ships if you no longer have cash won't be happening neither will there be a < 0 credit system.  This isnt a deep EVE like makeover.  The core of UEAW is deepening the experiance, but not turning it into a hardcore sim.

I know that the staff are aiming at bringing this mod for realism and gameplay mostly, but from what ive seen so far, checking back from when i can, this mod is going to transform itself into Empire: Total War style with all the stuff you have to concentrate on. now i know theres nothing wrong with that, but you also have to keep in mind if the mod will be long to play, wich is the case of Empire total war, or if youll stick to the basics of the game. not completely destroying it.

you can critisize what i said if you want, this is a review of your situations and possible truthful predictions of the mod after all.

But i'm guessing some units shouldn't have upkeep, or much, as many people in the rebellio joined out of free will, and most droids didn't last long enough for thier first service.
