The UEAW Mod Launcher and Automatic Updater
« on: March 18, 2007, 01:31 am »

Some time ago we had the idea of an automatic mod updater and I now proudly present you the outcome:

The UEAW Mod Launcher and Automatic Version Updater.

The idea was that when we release the next version (v4), we will spread this little program with it, and whenever we add a unit, fix a bug or change something else, the user will have it downloaded automaticly.
And this is exactly what it does. :)

Here is how it works:

After installing the UEAW v4 installer you downloaded from the website, you will start the program by the start-menu / desktop link.

Doing so, the launcher will pop up and open a connection to our update-server.

Note: If you use a special firewall, your firewall might ask you with a popup to allow the connection. Of course you have to allow this.

If a new version is availble, the program will download it.

When finished, it will ask you if you want to install the update now.
Of course you want and we also suggest you active the option, so this prompt will not show up again.

It then will install.
Note that the "Play Ultimate Empire at War" Button is greyed out,
just like the exit button.
Please do not close the program during the installation by force!

When installed, the program is ready and you can click on the "Play Ultimate Empire at War" Button.
Have Fun. :)

Notes:

Settings:
You can change the settings to disallow the automatic updates / installation by clicking on the settings button.
But we recommend to leave them like shown here:

No connection:
If the installer wants to check for an update and for some reason cannot connect to the update-server,
it will give you an error.

Reasons could be either you are not connected to the internet, a firewall blocks the updater from connecting to the internet, or our update-server is down.
You still can play, of course!

Installing not as an Administrator:
If you want to install the mod on a computer, you have to have administrator rights to do it.
(You have to have got for the original game, too! So you have them anyway.)
But if you want to install and are not an adminstrator, you will see a message that asks you for the administrator name and password.
Enter them, and the mod will be installed.

I forgot to mention 2 other things, that are so very usefull.

1) The updater can also delete files.
All I have to do is to include a file, that has 0byte size, and the same name as the file or directory, that has to be deleted.

2) It can also see if there is a shorter way to get to the current version.
For example: I forgot the delete the TGA file in the update from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4
So I packed it and named it update from 4.0.4 to 4.0.5.
So far ok.
But now the good part:
Since some of you didnt get the 03 to 04 update yet, you would have to download 2 files.
But the system sees that I also made a file for 4.0.3 to 4.0.5 and downloads this one, instead of the 2 others.
Cool, hu?

Thank you, for translating :)

I'm sure none of us would want to imagine the horror of what it would look like if I tried to translate it.

A great little piece of software, you guys. Good job!

Question: is there some way you guys could load these updates to the website or e-mail them to me in a zip archive to download on a faster machine than the one I am currently playing UEAW on?

I have ~~Ghasp~~ dial-up! (revealed)

When I tried to use the Launcher it said it would take me an hour to download 7 MBs of updates. I could really use an alternative so I can download it on a faster computer, save it, and use Sneaker-Net to install them.

I really wish that I could take better advantage of the Launcher, but, alas, I am stuck for now.

May the Force Serve You Well

You can simply use the installer on a faster pc, direct it to a folder on a memory stick or something and download it to there. When you get back to your pc, just overwrite the folder that exists on the slower pc.

Thank you Ross,

Unfortunately I tried to install the contents of ueawv4.zip onto my faster PC but the install program would not accept an installation since the faster machine does not have EAW-FOC installed on it. It will not be likely that I will install it on this machine either.

I figured this might happen, but I thought I'd maybe be able to install the Launcher just by itself without having to install the Mod.

If there is any other way to acquire the updates I would be grateful. I'd really like to enjoy the entirety of the experience your team has constructed. So far, I've been enjoying very much.

Thank you kindly.

That's odd, I always thought that was possible....

I'm stumped at the moment, sorry about this.
